Richard D. Brown, Watercolor Artist
Richard D. Brown received his Master's Degree from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Graphic Arts and Watercolor Painting. He became totally committed to transparent watercolor painting early in his art career while attending BYU, with the help and direction from valued mentor and friend, Glen Turner. Richard's various outings to the Southern Utah Desert have greatly contributed to interest. After sufficient trial and error, Richard found a creative niche that he liked.
After working as a graduate assistant, and later as a professor at BYU, he began a design career on campus. Richard later worked as the Designer & Art Director for Western Advertising, LDS Seminaries, and as designer and illustrator of The Friend Magazine for over 30 years. Since his retirement, Richard is enjoying a renewed interest in watercolor. Richard has been particularly fascinated with the stunning beauty of Utah's western landscapes for many years, but with more time to travel, has gained a renewed love of the many people, places, and scenery around the world.
Richard has been recognized numerous times for his stunning artwork, including: Best of Show and First Place at the Utah State Fair, Best of Show for Utah Watercolor Society, and Deseret News Grand Prize Purchase Award. Richard is a continuing contributor to the Springville National Spring Salon, winning both Merit Awards, Best in Show, and the Horace Merrill Award. Richard's artwork was included in the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Bid Book and Venue Map. Richard's artwork has been exhibited at the St. George Artist Market and the Datura Gallery, and his artwork is currently showcased in a variety of galleries across the Western United States.
His special interests include his family, his 16 grandchildren, fly-tying and fly-fishing, photography, golf, playing the harmonica, and gardening. He loves to travel, and recently Richard and his wife June have traveled to many beautiful locations, including Antarctica, Russia, the Baltic States, China & East Asia, Spain, New England, and Canada.
